zit status inventories every managed workspace and registered Git worktree with its task, agent, physical diff size (files, added/removed lines and binary count), and separate reasoned merge/cleanup assessments. The CLI, JSON, MCP, TUI and web ledger share the result (ADR 28).
Ordinary Git worktree task/agent metadata through local branch.<name>.zit-task and branch.<name>.zit-agent; task fallback to branch descriptions or a labelled commit-subject inference. Locked, detached, bare, missing, primary and non-UTF8 paths retain inventory entries.
Merge assessments distinguish composed-state checks still needed from a verified change’s own checks. Cleanup assessments protect unrecorded work, live managed owners, unique ordinary commits, primary checkouts and unfinished Git operations; ordinary agent activity and ignored files require review.
Workspace cleanliness no longer comes from a two-second advisory footprint cache, which could report clean immediately after edits. Fresh isolated snapshots preserve real indexes and include untracked, binary, empty and staged-only edits; inspection failures remain unknown.
Status inspection disables repository clean filters, fsmonitor and hooks, and declines configured custom merge drivers. Status does not run checks or stage the real index.
Failed evidence for a composed state blocks merge readiness even when the change’s own checks passed. Status no longer prunes accepted refs while listing, and rejects a report if current moves during inspection.
